Rambam Bekius

What to Give for Tzedakah (Hilchos Matnos Aniyim 7:3)

October 31, 2022 Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss Season 9 Episode 20
Rambam Bekius
What to Give for Tzedakah (Hilchos Matnos Aniyim 7:3)
Show Notes

This afternoon (10/31/22), in our Rambam Bekius mini-shiur, we began by thinking about the interrelationship between the three pesukim cited by the Rambam as the source of the mitzvas aseh of tzedakah. Next, we read the halacha about what (NOT how much) we are commanded to give. We then analyzed the case in which we are commanded to restore an impoverished person back to his prior standard of living, even if it was extremely high.

This week's Torah content has been sponsored by my friend and colleague, Rabbi Dr. Elie Feder. Rabbi Feder recently published a book called Gematria Refigured: A New Look at How the Torah Conveys Ideas Through Numbers (2022, Mosaica Press). The approach to gematria he presents in this book is neither fluffy nor fanciful, but rational. If you're interested in some sample chapters, check out the link below. If you have a social media platform and are interested in promoting or reviewing Rabbi Feder's book, let me know and I'll put the two of you in touch. The book is available for purchase at mosaicapress.com.
