Rambam Bekius
An Overview of Pidyon Shevuyim - The Redemption of Captives (Hilchos Matnos Aniyim 8:1-18)
Show Notes

This afternoon (12/22/21), in our Rambam Bekius chavurah, we learned through the Rambam's main halachos of pidyon shevuyim (the redemption of captives). Why did we learn about this topic? (And why does the YouTube thumbnail indicate that this is about honoring and revering one's rav?) Because we were led there by the Rambam's discussion of when a person should redeem his rav before his father and vice versa. We spent almost the entire session on these halachos, which were quite interesting! Tomorrow (God willing) we'll revisit Hilchos Talmud Torah and try to make sense of the exceptions to the rav/av priority rule in light of what we learned today.

Bekius Disclaimer:
Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. Each session consists of us reading through the Rambam's writings together without much preparation on my part, and without going into depth by consulting commentaries or primary sources. For all these reasons, there are bound to be inaccuracies, errors, and other types of shortcomings which would not be acceptable in a prepared shiur, but are quite typical of a bekius chavurah. Please bear this in mind, and know what you're signing up for when you listen!
