Rambam: On Being Paid for Torah - Part 2 (Hilchos Talmud Torah 3:10-11)
Show Notes

This afternoon (10/11/21), in our Rambam Bekius chavurah, we continued our exploration of the Rambam's view on the permissibility of being paid to learn, teach, or adjudicate Torah. We began with his (vehement) codification of his view in the Mishneh Torah. We then read and discussed the foonotes of R' Makbili (the editor of the critical edition of the Mishneh Torah we use), looking up some of the relevant primary sources he references and adding a few of our own. By now we have gathered the bulk of the facts we'll need to analyze the Rambam's view tomorrow (God willing).

Bekius Disclaimer:
Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. Each session consists of us reading through the Rambam's writings together without much preparation on my part, and without going into depth by consulting commentaries or primary sources. For all these reasons, there are bound to be inaccuracies, errors, and other types of shortcomings which would not be acceptable in a prepared shiur, but are quite typical of a bekius chavurah.
